100% WOODEN EYEWEAR, 100% DESIGN, 100% INNOVATION
HANDMADE IN TYROL
CARLOTTI and Rolf: a love story between two young wooden eyewear designers with a wealth of technical mastery and craftsmanship. Several years ago, we became the first boutique opticians in France to stock Rolf eyewear, in our rive gauche store.
Hailing from the village of Lecheschau in the Tyrol mountains, four designers with a passion for nature and creativity came up with an eyewear design that uses only natural materials, rather than traditional metals and plastics. In 2009, the first Rolf eyewear collection was born, handcrafted from their small workshop. Since then they have enjoyed a wave of success, sweeping up every Design and Innovation prize of the world’s most prestigious professional trade fairs.
100% wooden glasses
Wood has become the in-vogue material of eyewear design, and requires a large amount of skill and expertise for its use. Many wooden glasses are uncomfortable and stiff, and often bristle with metal pieces.
Rolf have developed a unique wooden frame crafting technique. Their lightness, comfort and contemporary curved design are what make Rolf glasses so unique. Using Formula 1 inspired technology, they have perfected the seamless wooden hinge design.
Collections designed from passion
It all began with a love story. “Mary” and “Roland”, the creators of the Rolf brand, shared a single, uncompromising vision of style and design. More than just a pipe dream? From their 846-metre high mountain village in Tyrol, Roland and Mary produced handcrafted wooden glasses that combined tradition with modernity.
For more than two and a half years, the two designers with their two boys searched for technical solutions in product design.
Mary would create the designs, while the boys set about building their very own machines, often adapted from other machines used by different crafts and trades. They would go on to invent an ingenious production system for mounting lenses into the frame without needing to cut or add screws.
They then trained up a number of highly skilled manual craftsman to work on the production of their eyewear models. It takes hours of manual work and over 78 different production stages to make a pair of Rolf glasses. Concentration and precision are paramount.
Wood is a material traditionally used in the manufacture of furniture. However, as each tree grows, it develops its own structure which varies in terms of density, size and texture. Since wood is not a homogenous material, each piece has its own unique character.
Always looking for innovative materials, Rolf has also created a new “Woodstone” collection, a symbiosis of wood and stone materials, resulting in wooden frames with a layered schist structure effect.
The latest Rolf collection is a marriage of wood and horn. This design features a wooden frame with a thin top layer of finely polished horn. Once again, this mounting of two different materials requires a high degree of expertise to ensure they do not break apart.
What Rolf admires most is the extraordinary blend of talent, creativity and innovation needed for that perfect mastery of workshop shaping techniques. The result? Exquisite masterpieces handcrafted to perfection.
