Chrome Hearts eyewear is part of the history of a brand inspired by the world of bikers and rock & roll…
Chrome Hearts: at the crossroads of luxury, rock and roll and provocation
Chrome Hearts was launched in 1988 in Los Angeles by motorbike enthusiast Richard Stark and his wife Laurie Stark, who worked in fashion at the time. He has had a fascination for the “bikers” world since childhood. At 9 years old, on seeing a group of Hells Angels pass by during a funeral, the young Richard remarked: “that’s what I want to be when I’m older”. He would go on to buy his first motorbike 15 years later!
Originally, the brand designed and made leather jackets and trousers inspired by the motorbike world. The clothing was of the highest quality but only certain people could buy it. In 1992, Chrome Hearts won the CFDA, the Council of Fashion Designers Award. That’s when business began to boom for this small family company that had made its way working with rock stars and famous fashion designers (including Karl Lagerfeld and Comme des Garçons). To add to their leather clothing range, they introduced sterling silver jewellery, belts, furnishings and bespoke leather and silver items.
In the US and worldwide, Chrome Hearts is best known for its collection of silver jewellery, entirely handcrafted in the workshops of Los Angeles. The pieces are renowned for their “raw” style and special polishing technique that enhances the embossed designs. Most pieces are decorated with symbols that mean something to the brand, such as the fleur de lys or the Maltese cross and dagger, symbols guaranteed to draw the eye.
The pieces are gothic inspired, with evocative – even provocative – product names.
Chrome Hearts eyewear: the craft of the skilled artisan
The first Chrome Hearts eyewear range was launched in 2002. While it takes most eyewear brands six months to take a new collection from drawing board to boutique, Chrome Hearts is the fruit of a two-year labour of love. Why? The answer lies in the model design stage itself, which Richard Stark sees as a concentrated period of creativity and artisanal virtuosity. He uses more than a dozen workshops worldwide to shape the titanium, work the rare woods such as Macassar ebony and mahogany, and insert the diamonds. To give one example of the skill involved, the wooden temples are worked by superimposing several thin layers to maintain the desired flexibility, before being hand polished for a matte or glossy finish to bring the material to life. Delicate laser work is needed to create the temple motifs, with certain models involving wood or pearl marquetry work. It is this blend of talent and quality materials that has earned Chrome Hearts its luxury eyewear label. Chrome Hearts wanted to go beyond simply designing ordinary eyewear. Their aim was to produce exclusive luxury items for those with an eye for the discreet quality hidden in the precision of the craft.
Along with the rock ‘n’ roll inspired pieces, the range also features more classic models. This is why bikers are not the only Chrome Hearts devotees: businessmen and women with a more traditional style have also fallen in love with the brand.
At the workshops in Los Angeles, each Chrome Hearts eyewear piece is given its finishing touches. No detail is left to chance: the sunglasses are mounted with Zeiss lenses to give them an excellent optical quality and protection.
